Commerce Kids Read!
Commerce Kids Read! is a program of Commerce Library Literacy Services. The goal of Commerce Kids Read! is to help children read more independently and with better understanding. Volunteer tutors attend training workshops where they learn and practice different methods and techniques that will be used to help the children become better readers. If you are interested in more information about this program or would like to become a tutor, please call the Literacy Services office at (323) 722-7323.

A. At the training workshop you will be shown what to work on. You will have time to practice the various ways and techniques you will use to help your students improve their reading. Back

A. You need patience, be a good listener, maintain control over the tutoring session and remember to praise your students for every success, no matter how minor. Back

A. Your goal is to help them to read independently and with increased understanding. You will read to them and work on vocabulary building, phonics and other word-attack skills, comprehension, and writing. Back

Q. What are the benefits of tutoring?

A. Becoming a volunteer tutor is a great way to give back to your community and it is a great addition to your resume, and any scholarship applications you pursue. Many businesses and colleges look at volunteerism as an asset and an indicator of an applicant’s maturity and willingness to help others. Back
