Commerce Kids Read!
Commerce Kids Read! (CKR) is a program of Commerce Library Literacy Services. This program is designed for children ages 7-12 that are having trouble with reading in school and need extra help. Children receive an hour of tutoring twice a week.

The goal of Commerce Kids Read! is to help children read more independently and with better understanding. Students are tutored in the following areas:

• Sight Vocabulary
• Phonics
• Word-attack skills
• Comprehension
• Writing

It is very important that children attend each class. Children who miss three classes in a row or a total of six classes in a session, will be dropped from the program.

If you have been informed by your child’s teacher, or suspect that he/she is having trouble reading, please call Literacy Services our department will provide more information on how to enroll your child in this program. If there are not enough volunteer tutors, priority will be given to the students who need the most help (lowest level). Children are assigned to groups according to age and ability. Children receive an hour of tutoring twice a week.
Information for Interested CKR Volunteers
Thank you for your interest in volunteering with the Commerce Kids Read! program. We are looking for people who are willing to help children to read and write better. You will be opening up a world of opportunity and learning for each child you will be tutoring. Children who can read and write better report that:

• They do better in school.
• They enjoy reading.
• They have higher self-esteem.
• They feel more independent.

Tutors are asked to commit to a minimum of six months. Teaching someone to read and write better takes time and it is always at the pace of the child’s ability. Six months is the time we set for a child to begin to see and believe in their own progress and potential.

Tutors meet with their small group for 10-16 weeks twice a week for one hour, until the session is over.

The job of the CKR volunteer tutor is important and essential to the success of the Literacy Center. All volunteers are asked to:

• Represent the Library in a positive light.
• Meet twice a week with your students and be on time.
• Respect your students and library staff.
• Respect the materials used in the library and literacy center.
• Keep all personal information confidential.
One-on-One Kids
This program is designed for students in grades 3 – 12 who have been diagnosed with a learning disability. Children meet with a special education teacher to help improve reading and writing skills.

How to become a CKR Volunteer
In order to serve as a volunteer, you must agree to a personal background check, having your fingerprints taken and complete 12 hours of tutor training. Upon receipt of favorable results from the Department of Justice and the completion of the tutor training, you will be certified as a volunteer.

California State Law requires a background check, fingerprinting (Live Scan), and TB test for people who work directly with children.

The Library Department works with the Department of Human Resources to process volunteers and there is no cost to you.

If this is an opportunity that interests you, please complete a volunteer application at the Literacy Center.
